Upgrading LAN-Cell Mobile Gateway Firmware

Please see the LAN-Cell User's Guide for more specific details and examples of how to upgrade the LAN-Cell's firmware.

There are 3 different methods you can use to install firmware upgrades into your LAN-Cell:

1. Web Configurator (HTTP/HTTPS)
2. FTP
3. TFTP

The recommended method is to use the LAN-Cell's built-in Web Configurator tool while connected to one of the LAN-Cell's LAN interface ports.

We discourage upgrading the firmware over a WAN connection (esp. Cellular) due to the slow speed and potential for permanently damaging the LAN-Cell if communications are interrupted. If you must upgrade the firmware over a WAN link, we recommend using the FTP procedure. Do not use the TFTP approach over a Cellular link due to the high latency inherent in cellular communications.

Backup the LAN-Cell's Configuration

The Release Notes for each firmware upgrade will indicate whether or not installing the firmware will cause the LAN-Cell's existing configuration parameters to be lost and reset to factory defaults. Even if the upgrade does not require a configuration reset, we strongly recommend that you backup the LAN-Cell's configuration parameters before upgrading the firmware.

* Backup using Web Configurator

o Choose the MAINTENANCE > CONFIGURATION tab.
o Click the BACKUP button.
o Save the configuration file to your PC.

* Backup using FTP

o From a PC, use your FTP client to open a connection to the LAN-Cell.
o Log in with the user name "root" and your LAN-Cell's web password.
o Set the file transfer mode to "binary".
o Get the filename "rom-0" and save to your local PC.
Example:  GET rom-0 mylancell.rom

Installing LAN-Cell Firmware

Once you begin a firmware upload, DO NOT POWER CYCLE the LAN-Cell.

When the firmware upload is complete, the LAN-Cell will reset and you will be able to reconnect using the Web or SMT interfaces. Do not reset the LAN-Cell until you have successfully reconnected to the device after a firmware upgrade.

* Using the Web Configurator

o Choose the MAINTENANCE > F/W UPLOAD tab.
o Use the BROWSE button to locate the firmware's ".bin" file on your PC.
o Click the UPLOAD button.

* Using FTP

o From a PC, use your FTP client to open a connection to the LAN-Cell.
o Log in with the user name "root" and your LAN-Cell's web password.
o Set the file transfer mode to "binary".
o Put the ".bin" filename from the new firmware to a file named "ras" on the LAN-Cell. You must use the destination filename "ras".
Example:  PUT firmwarefilename.bin ras

Confirming the new firmware revision

After the firmware upload is complete and you are able to reconnect to the LAN-Cell, you can confirm that the current firmware revision matches the one you installed.

* Using the Web Configurator

o Choose the MAINTENANCE > STATUS tab.
o Check the ProxiOS version and date. The date will be the release date of the firmware, not the date you installed it.

* Using the SMT

o Choose menu option 24 then option 1
o Check the RAS firmware version and date. The date will be the release date of the firmware, not the date you installed it.
o You can also check the version using the Command Line Interface (CLI - SMT Menu 24.8) by entering SYS VERSION at the command prompt.
